Shea Partnership Transforms Schools
The Daughters of Charity have been fortunate to partner with Shea Family Charities for over 12 years. The Shea Family is committed to Catholic Education and have demonstrated that dedication by investing over $17 million to construction and curriculum projects at five of the ten DOC Schools.
The impact of this partnership is immeasurable. Literally thousands of children have benefited from the Shea’s work. This year marks one of the largest projects in the history of the partnership. Shea Construction is creating an $8 million multipurpose building on the campus of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School in Maryvale, AZ.
The school serves over 500 PreK through eighth graders in this Phoenix suburb. The new building will feature:
- A gymnasium that doubles as an auditorium-theater
- A large stage and performance space
- Music & Art rooms
- STREAM (science, technology, religion engineering, arts and mathematics) lab/maker space.
- Learning Commons
- Administrative office space, allowing for the removal of existing modulars
- Seven additional state-of-the-art classrooms
The existing campus will be given a facelift. A new parking lot will be created with newly designed fencing and a campus security feature. You can learn more about the project by watching the attached videos.
Shea has also contributed to SVdPs efforts to integrate blended learning into its curriculum. Blended learning is a style of education in which students learn via electronic and online media as well as traditional face-to-face teaching. These techniques have been extremely valuable to teachers as the pandemic has forced most students to distance learning.
Besides the current work at SVdP, the Sheas have completed a wide variety of projects at other schools. From a new gymnasium at Our Lady of Talpa in Los Angeles, to major renovations and safety upgrades at St. Patrick’s School in San Jose, Shea Construction is a powerful partner that has had a tremendous impact on Daughter of Charity schools.
In the fall of 2019, Carrie Shea Titlon and her mother, Dorothy Shea speak to Francisco Silva and Carlos Espinoza in the Science Lab at Our Lady of Talpa School in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of LA. The Shea Foundation renovated the entire school in 2019.
